Again, this list is far from exhaustive, but rather a pick of our current hot spots. Keep checking back, as it is likely to change over time. More complete information, encompassing all types of cuisine, is to be found in our visitors’ pack.
Kirkby Stephen
The Black Bull
Pub menu for both lunch and dinner, offering value and quality, pies seem to be the order of day. We’ve seen the plates, and they are loaded!
Mango Tree
Kirkby Stephen’s first Indian restaurant and the best curry North of Birmingham.
Brough
The Inn
Elegant, contemporary Georgian Inn which serves good value and tasty food. Well worth a journey.
Brough Castle Ice Cream Parlour
Do not miss this.
Swanson House
Great local food, fantastic value. Highly recommended.
Appleby-in-Westmoreland
The Sanford Arms
A charming old world pub providing well cooked food from its restaurant, between Kirkby Stephen and Appleby.
The Tufton Arms
Nice food, great atmosphere.
Ravenstonedale
The King’s Head
In our opinion, probably the very best food in the area and no visit is complete without at least one meal here. We tend to drive over, get a taxi back and then it is a short walk across the fell the next morning to reclaim the car. Update (April 2015) – eat here! It just keeps on getting better!
Black Swan Hotel
Good á la carte as well as daily specials, nicely cooked classics prepared from local produce. Winner of the AA Pub of the Year for England in 2014.
Tebay
Cross Keys Inn
A larger selection of real ales than most the pubs in the area and very good pub food
Nateby
The Inn
We haven’t tried this ourselves yet, but have had good reports back about its staple pub food.
Kirkby Lonsdale
Platos
As mentioned in our favourite things to do – always a treat.
Others
Sharrow Bay
The restaurant overlooks Lake Ullswater, with the most spectacular views, friendly atmosphere and great food. It is about 45 minutes away.
L’Enclume
Founding home of Simon Rogan’s gastronomic empire. An hour away in Cartmel.
